A little about the band

The Eugene Portman Trio was formed in 2004 and has performed extensively in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, London and throughout UK. Eugene Portman was already firmly established as a jazz pianist and was touring extensively with the wonderful jazz vocalist Alice Harvey. He was also appearing up and down both in jazz bands and as a solo performer. Having been requested on numerous occasions to put a trio together for various events he eventually began to use the same musicians nearly all the time. So the Eugene Portman Trio was formed and consists of Eugene Portman from Lingfield, Surrey (on piano); Dave Trigwell from East Grinsted, Sussex on drums and Mike Porter-Ward from Faversham, Kent on bass. The Eugene Portman Trio grew from a need for jazz that wasn't too high-brow, but consisted of great tunes. A style of music that would have a more general appeal than most contemporary jazz bands. Influences having been the classic jazz trios of Dudley Moore, Oscar Peterson and Monty Alexander. These influences combined with a an innovative creativity and a certain "feel good" quality" have been instrumental in making the trio highly suitable for corporate events, weddings and private parties. The music can be mellow at times and exciting when the mood calls for it.

Apart from the great music that they produce; they also project a feeling of sheer joy. The fact that they are the best of friends seems to be self evident in their music.

How far will they travel?

There isn't really any restriction on how far the trio will travel. They are permanently travelling throughout the UK so if they have an event in Cumbria then it wouldn't be far to travel to Lancashire for a wedding on the following day. Most of there work comes from the following counties:

Essex

Kent

Sussex

Surrey

Hampshire

London

Essex

Suffolk

Berkshire

Hertfordshire

Buckinghamshire

Bedfordshire

Visit Mamma Mia's and rest assured that the music is going to be accessible and entertaining. Eugene's style of piano playing is melodic and easy on the ear. His music consists of great tunes played in his own inimitable way. Eugene's repertoire and style of jazz is not ultra modern and it seems to have a 'feel good' quality. He plays tunes that people know and he adapts them to his own style of piano playing. His style of piano playing is reminiscent of Oscar Peterson, George Shearing and Erroll Garner.

Mamma Mia is situated in a great location in the heart of Tunbridge Wells, occupying two floors of a large attractive building, full of character, however a modern contemporary interior awaits. Above all Mamma Mia provides a comfortable & relaxed environment.

They offer a wide range of authentic healthy Italian food cooked to precision using only the freshest and finest ingredients. They have an extensive pizza menu, a large variety of pasta, meat and vegetarian dishes, and some mouth watering seafood. Offering exceptional value for money, their portions are generous and pleasing, and their staff enthusiastic and friendly.
